Tomasa Martin

Spanish artist Tomasa Martin creates illustrative art inspired by how the emotional and physical states of human beings change like the seasons. Working in oil and acrylic simultaneously, Tomasa produces moving and semi-surrealist portrait paintings which capture the ever-changing nature of human emotion, feeling and expression.

Tomasa Martin’s Style and Practice

Tomasa studied art at La Escola Massana in Barcelona and shortly after took her first steps towards pursuing a career in the arts. Integral to Tomasa’s practice is highlighting the emotional character of her subjects rather than just creating a physical portrait of them. Her style is a blend of figurative and minimalist and, although calming and quiet to perceive, her work has a sensual and emotional force to be reckoned with. There is something immensely private and intimate about her portraits which often take place in mundane or usually uneventful spaces. This provides works such as Muse of the Afternoon and Sara en la escuela with a fresh perspective and pertains to how precious and unexpected small moments in our little life can be.

Press and Exhibitions

Tomasa has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide from Portugal to Japan. She has showcased her work at the Natsu Gallery in Tokyo, participated in the Contemporary Art Fair in Lille, and taken home the prestigious Juan Ramón Masoliver National Painting Prize from Barcelona too.
