Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk is a contemporary British artist who rose to prominence with his notorious final show at the Royal College of Art. He presented his examiners with an empty space marked only by a blue heritage plaque that read ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91’. When the Royal College refused to award the artist his degree, Charles Saatchi included Gavin in his Sensation exhibition. He has since enjoyed a busy and exciting career. We love this maverick artist for his daring, thought-provoking pieces. Not only is Gavin’s work fun and surprising, but it also deals with deeper issues of authorship, authenticity and identity in art.

Gavin completed his undergraduate degree at the Chelsea School of Art before pursuing – and of course being refused – his MA at the Royal College of Art. The artist went on to win the Jack Goldhill Sculpture Prize (2000) as well as the Charles Wollaston Award (2007) at London’s Royal Academy of Arts.

The notorious Gavin has held many international solo shows. The artist was also commissioned to design a sculpture for the One New Change development next to St Paul’s. The result was ‘Nail’: a 12-metre bronze replica of a rusty nail that stands 'hammered between the ancient and the modern'.
