Lisa Denyer

Lisa Denyer is an abstract painter who examines the materiality and physical properties of paint. Splitting her time between Berlin and Manchester, her practice combines multiple materials selected for their textural qualities and how they assist and disrupt application. Taking inspiration from ideas around modernity and escapism, she explores the formal properties and transportive qualities of colour and scale.

Lisa Denyer’s Early Career and Practice

Lisa graduated from Coventry University in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Dense, weighty, and usually handmade using thick plywood, clay, panel or sandpaper, Lisa’s paintings investigate the polarity between fast and slow, and sharp and soft. In addition, her abstract works often relate to the body and the built environment and analyse the relationship we have with different spaces - for example, the natural and the virtual. Despite her exciting use of mixed media, Lisa’s approach remains considered and meditative and opposes the sensory overload of daily life

Exhibitions and Awards

In 2010, Lisa received second prize in the Gilchrist Fisher Award, held at Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London. In 2015, she obtained first prize in the PS Mirabel Open. Solo shows include Geode at South Square Gallery, Thornton, Paintings as Objects at PS Mirabel, Manchester, and MM Open Studio at Galerie Martin Mertens, Berlin. Other exhibitions include About Painting at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, Contemporary British Abstraction at SE9 Container Gallery, London, Sobre fragmentos y materia at Kir Royal Gallery, Madrid, and Contemporary Masters from Britain at Yantai Art Museum, China.
