Feminist art is broadly considered to be art that challenges male dominance, promotes equality and elevates women artists. This collection features paintings, prints, photography and more from leading emerging female artists across the world. About Feminist Art Feminist art rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s following pivotal developments in feminist theory. This time is commonly referred to as First Wave feminist art, and is characterised by an exploration of the feminine form and experience. Since then, feminist art has expanded into themes of womanhood, femininity and social assumptions and restrictions. Featured Female Artists Mikela Henry-Lowe is a Jamaican artist whose vibrant paintings celebrate the beauty of black women. Mikela has always been interested in the representation of black women in society and the portrait genre. Sonia Martin explores the line between reality and imagination in her work. Exploring the interactions between women and girls, Sonia presents scenes of the everyday in an intriguing way, hinting at an underlying, and at times eerie, narrative.
