London based artist Andrew Millar works across photography, collage and print to create surreal and other-worldly works of art. Andrew’s figurative style predominantly takes the form of female portraits. Verging on the gothic, Andrew uses a refined monochrome palette that typically consists of black, white, silver and gold. Whether in print or on a photograph, gold leaf is a recurring theme throughout, instilling a haunting yet fantastical quality to Andrew’s art.
Andrew Millar’s Early Life and Education
Andrew’s interest in photography was born out of the time he spent in his grandfather’s darkroom as a child. From an early age, Andrew was introduced to old cameras and shown how to develop film, which led him to studying Fine Art and Film Photography at University. Andrew is a process-based artist, always experimenting and developing his practice. The versatility that film offers is what captivates Andrew, especially the effects that Polaroid photographs can create. Andrew’s unique style has earnt him solo shows in Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and New York.
The ever-changing effects of Polaroid images allows Andrew to merge fantasy with reality. Andrew discovered the magical quality of the Polaroid camera during a trip to New York as a teenager. The black and white Polaroid images that Andrew produces have a graphic quality to them, often inspiring Andrew to transform them into hand-finished screenprints. The small scale of Polaroid images also allows Andrew to restrict the space he uses and ultimately create small pieces of art with the same visual impact as that of a larger piece.
"Andrew Millar’s unique and exquisite collages play with our expectations and create beautiful and surreal evocations of dreams, nightmares and Old Hollywood imagery. "
