Alma Sinai, born and raised in Iran, is an interdisciplinary artist working in printmaking, drawing, video, and installation.
Her work explores transformation through lived and collective experience, emotional and physical landscapes, and the environments and histories that both shape and are shaped by them. Working across printmaking, drawing, video, and installation, she investigates binaries such as absence and presence, interior and exterior, visibility and invisibility, and the spaces in between. Her work addresses shared conditions of displacement, trauma, vulnerability, resilience, and regeneration.
After earning an associate degree in Cinema from the University of Art in Tehran, she moved to the U.S. in 2010 to pursue a BFA at RISD and an MFA at Parsons. Sinai has exhibited internationally, in venues such as Klaus von Nichtssagend (NY), Dastan Gallery (Tehran), the University of Edinburgh and the International Print Center New York (IPCNY). Her works are part of the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Fondazione Imago Mundi in Treviso. She has participated in Residency-Fellowships such as Vermont Studio Center and Lunga School in Iceland and has been based in Berlin after finishing a residency program at GlogauAir in 2021. Alongside her artistic practice, she also works as a teaching artist.
For over 12 years, she has worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, from kindergarten to adults, across various countries. Her experience includes teaching and other educational roles at institutions such as The Drawing Center, Cornell University, Pardis for Children in collaboration with Asia Society, Vermont Studio Center and the LungA School. Her teaching integrates art history, cultural literacy, and sustainable practices, focusing on the use of everyday objects to create art. In the recent years Alma has been teaching workshops with InterACT English, TINCON Academy, Berlin Drawing Room & Alma Matter.
