Marta Grassi is a painter whose practice moves between figuration and abstraction. Through her colourful canvases and drawings, viewers are immersed in a dreamlike world that may echo a buried memory or a half-forgotten dream. Experimentation lies at the heart of her practice.
Marta Grassi grew up in Uruguay, surrounded by painters, in a family environment where art and creativity held a central place. After studying textile design in her hometown, the artist moved to Paris, where she attended workshops at the Beaux-Arts.
Although trained in figurative art, she does not confine herself to illustrating a tangible reality. Marta Grassi explores abstraction through colourful compositions and powerful atmospheric effects. She works across both drawing and painting, experimenting with acrylics, pastels, oil paints, and pigments, often juxtaposing these media to create unique and varied effects.
Marta Grassi’s painting is deeply rooted in her South American heritage. She is particularly influenced by the literary movement of Realismo Mágico (magical realism), which naturally portrays the unreal or the strange. Magical realism embraces the improbable, transforming familiar environments into dreamlike scenes. While the female figure is central to her work, animals and nature are also ever-present. Her intimate pieces invite viewers to step into a poetic and deeply mysterious universe.
