David Foord was born in Bournemouth and now lives and works in Bristol, UK.
He studied at Bath School of Art (2010 – 2013), working professionally since then and exhibiting widely across Bristol and the South West region. From September 2026, he will begin a year long Intaglio Portfolio course at Spike Print Studios.
Foord's practice is largely inspired by the British landscape. In his 'Atopic Disasters of Economy' series he looked at skin on a micro level, creating landscapes that reference the historical tensions in our environments and how the stresses of contemporary life impact us. Drawing on extreme images from medical journals of various different skin afflictions, these drawings (created using Conté crayons on off-white paper) provide an escapism into the world of our own bodies.
Most recently he has been creating a large body of mono-types, 'Clumps', inspired by the random groups of bushes, trees and bracken on the grassy plains near his home. Offering respite in the heat and a home for wildlife, these clumps appear like unwanted growths on a carefully managed public space. The mono-types have seen a new direction in the work too, allowing room for painterly expression with the immediacy of printing. The high absorbancy of newsprint allows for even the lightest brushstrokes to be picked up.
