The venerated David Hockney worked with a variety of visual media from painting to photography and stage design. Despite his eclecticism, the polymath has an undeniably recognisable style that pervades all of his work; bright colours, clear lines, experimental perspective, and the influence of his two (very different) homes: California and the north of England.

David Hockney was born in Bradford, England, and went on to study at the Royal College of Art in London. He quickly garnered success and attention, featuring in the Young Contemporaries exhibition that heralded the arrival of the British Pop Art movement. In the 1960s, he moved to California, a location that was to have a huge influence on his artwork, inspiring some of his most iconic pieces.

David Hockney is perhaps best known for his depictions of Los Angeles life. These acrylic paintings often took swimming pools as the central subject, although he was also known to paint the interiors and exteriors of LA homes.

In the 60s and 70s, David’s works often subtly illustrated the effects of living in an increasingly commercial society. However, Hockney’s social commentary was - and remains to be - essentially fluid. This highlights the uniquely human element that binds his oeuvre, a body of work which continues to grow and probe the numerous ways in which one can interpret an image or space, and what it means to be human at any historical moment.

60 years on, the artist continues to create art to this day, incorporating modern technologies and deconstructing old media as he develops his style. David started to make his first homemade prints in the 1980s, and in 2009 he began using iPhones and iPads to create digital paintings

“The world is very, very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don’t look very much. They scan the ground in front of them so they can walk, they don’t really look at things incredibly well, with an intensity. I do.” - David Hockney
