Landscapes and bodies converge in richly coloured scenes imbued with a sense of mystery, myth and folklore. Deriving inspiration from archeology and ecology, much of his drawings begins as observations made while out walking before taking on a new imaginative life in the studio as larger multimedia pieces. As a printmaker Dougal embraces experimentation, bringing a painterly manner and vigorous mark making to his prints. All his work is approached from a queer perspective seeking to both unearth and imagine queer narratives.
Dougal was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire where he continues to live and work. He graduated from Goldsmiths University of London with a BA in Fine art (2017) and then the Royal Drawing School’s postgraduate scholarship program ‘The Drawing Year’, where he was awarded the ACS drawing prize (2022). Frequently participating in residencies such as at Dumfries House in Scotland in 2023 and 2024 and he has exhibited drawings at Christies in London and Prints at the Woolwich contemporary print fair. He has works in the Royal Collection and private collections internationally.
