Emerging as an art movement in 1917, surrealists believed they could trust the unconscious mind more than the conscious one, which was vulnerable to the rational thoughts and societal values that lead Europe into World War One. Instead, they began creating art that elevated dream worlds and automatic drawing – letting the hand move spontaneously to create its own image. In the same spirit, surrealist collage artists would group images together that might not seem natural, following an unconscious sense of what is right and wrong.
