Chris Shaw Hughes

Through beautifully and painstakingly crafted paintings and drawings, Chris Shaw Hughes documents places with collective trauma in their history. He has a deft way with line that makes his work highly detailed, like a photograph (Aesthetica magazine called them "technical marvels"). He began using carbon paper to explore a 'negative' aesthetic and ideas of sensitivity to place and history.

In 2010, Shaw Hughes was selected for the ICA's Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition, making him
part of a new wave of challenging contemporary artists. He's also shown at the Liverpool Biennale and Ruskin Drawing Prize show.

He has said: "I’m interested in how some places are ‘defined’ by the events that happen within them, and whether the aura of trauma remains, either in the places, or in our representations of them."
