Mark Metcalfe

Mark Metcalfe is known for his emotive, dramatic and realistic paintings, capturing compelling portraits, nudes and scenes of intrigue. Although he is known primarily for his paintings, Mark also creates prints and drawings. Mark’s characters are unique in the way they communicate feelings of nostalgia, tension and at times, melancholy. Whilst some of Mark’s images evoke scenes from the past, resembling old photographs with a sepia lense, others allude to the language of myth and allegory.

Mark Metcalfe’s Education and Career

Mark is currently based in the UK and Berlin, where he works as an artist, writer and tutor. Currently in the process of completing his first major volume of poetry, Mark has spent over twenty years studying Transpersonal Psychology and Mysticism and has written extensively on Kabbalah and the Western Tradition. Prior to his life as an artist and a writer, Mark completed a BA in Fine Art from London Metropolitan University and an MA in Printmaking from UAL.

The Banal Lapses of Heroes

With The Banal Lapses of Heroes series, Mark has created a collection of prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures that reconstruct and reimagine narratives, playing with the themes of collective memory to externalise hidden emotions. Each piece in the collection, whether in a realistic or figurative style, exposes archetypes and symbolism to delve into the emotive language of the piece.
