Blurring the Line Between Art and Craft
Gail Altschuler creates narrative vessels and wall-mounted porcelain plates that blend fine art with craft. Her pieces—illustrated with sketchbook observations—feature themes such as human relationships, couples, Zoom meetings, musicians, and objects drawn during museum visits. Each plate includes a wall-hanging disc affixed to the back, transforming functional ceramics into storytelling artworks.
Working with porcelain as her canvas, Gail employs a layered decorative process that combines Mishima (inlay), sgraffito, and coloured washes, all finished under a transparent glaze. Her work is visually engaging and conceptually rich, reflecting her background in drawing, art history, and ceramics.
Based in her home studio in North London, Gail has dedicated her life to the visual arts. She holds qualifications in Art and Design, Fine Art, and History of Art, and earned an MA in Art and Design Education. In addition to her own practice, she teaches ceramics, art, and art history to adults, teens, and children.
