Contemporary American artist Janise Yntema, born 1962, works in encaustic, an ancient painting technique composed of beeswax, resin and pigment. Her innovative works, which often merge mixed-media paintings and photography, attest to the ephemerality, beauty and fragility of nature and are informed by themes of landscape and identity.

Janise Yntema’s Education and Career

Janise studied at the St John the Divine Stoneyard Institute and then at the Art Students League in New York in 1979. She later went on to train at the Parsons School of Design where she received a degree in Fine Arts. The artist currently lives and works in Brussels, Belgium, creating pieces which promote her interest in global politics, limiting chemical usage and, in particular, raising awareness about the loss of bee colonies.

Style and Approach

Janise applies several layers of translucent pigmented wax which she then blends with a blowtorch to create a refined and shiny surface. The artist has also been known to combine photography with this ancestral medium, providing a modern and renewed platform for traditional techniques. A slow and delicate process is required to produce her many-hued minimalist landscape paintings such as How Soon is Now?. The use of such pure materials as well as choosing to use luminous yet melancholy colour palettes echoes themes of fragility, temporality and virtue.

Press and Collections

The inherent beauty of her mixed-media works has been enjoyed globally. Janise has exhibited her work in solo shows in London, New York, Amsterdam and Belgium. Her work has also been added to distinguished collections worldwide such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Gutenberg Museum, Germany.
