Curator at Large | 4 Current London Exhibitions You Don't Want to Miss

Hector Campbell, our new Curator at Large, has his eye on the latest and greatest contemporary exhibitions, and he's always on the lookout for promising up-and-coming artists. If you're in search of your next art fix, here are four current London exhibitions that Hector recommends.

1. Jerwood Solo Presentations, Jerwood space

Jerwood Space in Borough hosts it’s fourth edition of Jerwood Solo Presentations, allowing three emerging artists to produce and exhibit a new body of work with support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. Selected by Sarah Williams and Lauren Houlton of Jerwood Visual Arts, this year's three concurrent solo show feature Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom, Kitty Clark and Sofia Mitsola, working across a range of mediums from sculpture, audio, and video installation and painting.

Slade School of Fine Art MFA Painting graduate Mitsola leads the pack with her large scale figurative paintings examining contemporary female representation while referencing historical Greek and Egyptian mythology. The show runs until 10th March.

 

2. The Numbing Vibrancy of Characters in Play, Peer gallery

Young female British painters are increasingly at the forefront of exciting emerging art, as shown by Jadé Fadojutimi’s and Flora Yukhnovich’s current solo exhibitions, at PEER Gallery in Hoxton and Parafin Gallery in Mayfair respectively.

‘The Numbing Vibrancy of Characters in Play’, Fadojutimi’s first solo exhibition in a UK public institution, continues the Royal College of Art MA graduates exploration into the ability to capture emotion and identity through abstraction as well as to portray multiple interwoven narratives. The exhibition runs until 6th April.

 

3. Sweet spot, parafin Gallery

City & Guilds of London Art School MA graduate Yukhnovich’s latest solo exhibition ‘Sweet Spot’ presents large oil on linen works that display her talent at merging both figuration and abstraction, as well as her disparate influences which range from 18th century French Rococo artwork to classic animated Disney films. 'Sweet Spot’ runs until 30th March.

4. Premiums: Interim Projects, Royal Academy schools

The Royal Academy Schools take over the Weston Studio and The McAulay Gallery of the Royal Academy of Arts newly refurbished and enlarged complex to present the annual ‘Premiums: Interim Projects’ show, featuring young artists halfway through their postgraduate studies in the prestigious Burlington House studios.

Highlights include Clara Hastrup's rotating cactus instrument, Jenkin van Zyl’s nightmarish chamber, Joe Pearson’s cosmic caricatures, Harminder Judge’s ethereal reliefs, and Liv Preston’s arcade assemblage. ‘Premiums: Interim Projects 2019’ runs until 13th March.
