A story that is both contemporary and very ancient … Anchored and elongated, timeless, the solid wood sculptures of Marc Laffolay appear as a dialogue between matter and time.
Imaginary writings, elongated verticals, both soft and raw, graphic, they attempt to address what we carry within us that is most authentic, most original. Their charred, textured surfaces bear the traces of the time that shapes us, conferring upon these pieces a raw sensuality that calls for touch. Timeless, they reveal, beyond the simple story, the soul of matter. Often perforated, these sculptures allow light to pass through.
"In most of my pieces, I attempt to communicate both a momentum and an anchorage, like a link between earth and sky."
As the ambient lighting changes, they redraw themselves on the walls in a play of shadows and lights. Between lyrical abstraction and raw materiality, Marc Laffolay's work is part of an approach where the past and present overlap, as if derived from an imaginary archaeology.
"For me, the vertical is more than just a simple geometric line, it is a dynamic!"
