Hermione Carline’s work evokes the feeling of light passing through an open window or overviews of a city garden. Her pictures could be described as an impression or a memory that still leaves much to the imagination of the viewer so that her work can be read on many levels. After recent trips to…Show more Japan, Carline was inspired by the use of screening and light in traditional Japanese architecture which led on to her exploring similar ideas of light and shadow, translucence and opacity. Carline describes her process of making the works as layering and obscuring colour almost to the point of destroying the painting until she perceives a balance in the work. She imbues the work with an immersive and atmospheric quality to create pieces that are abstract but always firmly rooted in the material world. After graduating Hermione worked as a textile designer, co-founding the design studio The Collection, selling throughout Europe, Japan and the USA before returning to fine art in 2005.Show less
"Hermione's multi-panel works make beautiful and considered statements on contemporary abstraction. Borrowing references from ancient Asian architecture and textiles, her paintings composed of layered fragments, convey a sense of fragility that is both enchanting yet powerful. "
