Blogger of the Moment: Lori Langille from Automatism

Posted by Katherine Lachance Lavergne on 15th November 2013

Our Blogger of the Moment this week is Lori Langille, a Canadian collage illustrator who started her blog automatism to share whatever she finds inspiring, interesting, or simply beautiful in interiors, design, art, illustration and other creative fields. We've asked her some questions to learn more about her and her blog...

How did you get started working as a full-time collage illustrator?

I actually didn't do collage for illustration commissions until several years ago — before that I was doing gouache resist and ink mainly, with a bit of experimenting in mixed media. It was because I was feeling burned out from doing a lot of ink drawings for an ongoing series of clip art illustrations that I decided it was time to make the leap, and do something that challenged me to think in a different way. It was a bit scary to switch styles so drastically, but the response from art directors was amazingly positive and I haven't looked back since.

As a collage illustrator, what’s the most fun project you’ve ever done?

Right now I'm in the process of creating a wall mural for Mildred's Temple Kitchen, a fantastic Toronto eatery that's famous for its brunches. I was commissioned to create the logo for Mildred's several years ago, so it was exciting to be called back to do something so different for me. I've never worked on such a large scale assignment before — waiting to see how it all turns out!

You work full-time and blog — how do you balance both worlds?

I'm still figuring out how to balance freelance work and blogging, to be honest. There are still late nights spent working on one or the other, but deadlines need to be met and I'm fine with that. But even on the busiest days I feel I'm very lucky to be able to do what I love.

You have many art pieces on your blog — how would you describe you art style?

I think my collage work is best described as elegant with an undercurrent of humour. I find that other people really respond (as I do) to illustrations that have both of these elements. I also think it reflects my interest in Surrealism, which likes to upend the conventional in an unexpected and often playful way.

How would you describe your personal homestyle?

My personal homestyle is bohemian modern, with a good dash of Scandinavian mid century. I'm constantly inspired by the places that I feature on my blog, too — I love looking at beautiful homes from all over, getting ideas for my own small space.

What blogs do you read for inspiration?

There are just so many great blogs out there that I love, but a few that I read regularly are sfgirlbybay, emma's designblogg, pia jane bijkerk, solid frog and poppytalk.

What's your favourite piece of art on Rise Art?

It took me forever to decide as there's so much great work on Rise Art, but I found myself really drawn to 'Winter's Tide' by Paul Bennett — love the modern composition and truly gorgeous old school painting technique. This work really captures the restless power of the sea.
