Munch's "The Scream" to fetch £50 million

One of four copies of Edvard Munch's iconic painting is estimated to sell for $80 million in Sotheby's upcoming Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in New York. The pastel is the lead piece in an auction that includes works by Picasso, Sisley, and Miró.

On May 2nd, one of four copies of Edvard Munch's the scream, this a pastel from 1895, will lead the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in New York.  There are two paintings of the iconic Scream, and two pastels.  One in each medium rest in the Munch Museum and the remaining painting is with National Gallery of Norway, both in Oslo.  The work being sold is the only copy in private hands.  It is being sold by Peter Olsen, of the Olsen shipping dynasty, whose father acquired the work as an avid collector of Munch's work and friend of the artist.  The proceeds from the sale are set to fund the construction of a museum to house Olsen's collection.

While we at Rise Art are happy to see the proceeds go toward a wonderful project bringing more art to the public, we were equally amused as The Scream featured in our marketing materials for the launch of art rentals at the London Art Fair.  With reproduction posters of work omnipresent, our marketing asked if it wasn't time to replace that poster and upgrade your walls with Rise Art rentals.  Click here to learn more about how our art rentals work or here to see London Art Fair Curator Pryle Behrman lead a tour of the Rise Art stand at this year's fair.
