Few things symbolize London and England more than red telephone boxes, double decker buses and the Blue Plaques adorning buildings across the capital which provide a signpost to the cities past glory. The fantastic thing about the plaques is the element of surprise. Every corner is an opportunity to see a location where people who constructed the world we inherit lived and worked. They open a magical door to history, which otherwise would be ignored. It is quite sad then, to hear this weeks announcement that English Heritage is to discontinue the blue plaque project.
