Hermione Carline

Hermione Carline is a London-based English multimedia artist and oil painter inspired by contemporary abstraction, architecture and the natural world. Hermione stands out for her enchanting yet powerful stencilled oil paintings; at once fragile and yet imbued with intrigue and charm.

Education and Early Career

Hermione grew up surrounded by art. Both of her parents were artists, and her aunt married the renowned Stanley Spencer. Hermione studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art and then successfully pursued an MA in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art. Hermione co-founded an international textile company called The Collection. The artist sold to top designers including Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix and travelled the world, spending extended periods in Japan and the United States. Hermione officially turned to Fine Art in 2004, though her love of fabric, intricate paper cut stencils and design shines on through her work.

Hermione Carline’s Style and Approach

Hermione’s practice involves continual transformation. Her landscapes paintings come together over many weeks through the multiple application of translucent and semi opaque colour. Hermione layers transparent pigments to create three-dimensional geometric forms and, in doing so, creates an abstract topography of painted passages and shapes which recede and rise up from the canvas. Altogether, her experimental tools combine and charge her pieces with an immersive, dreamlike quality as experienced in the deeply thoughtful stencil painting Fragrant Water, oil on birch plywood. Overall, her aim is to portray landscape as it is experienced viscerally, sensorially and in memory.

Exhibitions and Accolades

The award-winning artist has been featured in publications such as The Times and Focus London. Of late, Hermione has collaborated with the Mayo Clinic and Claridge’s Hotel, as well as exhibited with Gallery Elena Shchukina in Mayfair and at The Other Art Fair and the Affordable Art Fair. Her work can be found in private collections in the UK and overseas. Alongside her practice, Hermione established her business, Art-Atelier, where she provides courses for aspirational adults and young artists.
