      Jione Choi

London-based abstract-expressionist artist Jione Choi has built a practice based upon memories. Though intangible, memories can act as mechanisms through which we see the world. Interested in how they appear and disappear, her drawings and paintings explore this fluid sense of ethereality, recalling past and present at once.

Jione Choi’s Early Career and Practice

From Seoul and now based in London, Jione gained an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art. After graduating, she received a Global Talent Visa to live as an artist based in London. Jione also possesses a BA and MA in Painting from Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea. Jione uses her super-imposed pencil lines and shadow work to create portraits of her ever-changing mental state and explore notions of physical/psychological absence/presence- often inspired by her longing for home.

      Awards and Exhibitions

The Sunny Art Prize, 2022, and the Royal Society of Watercolour Open, 2022, shortlisted Jione. In 2021, she had a solo show at Keep In Touch, Seoul, and she won the second prize in the Le Franc 300th Anniversary Oil Painting competition held in South Korea. She was on the shortlist for the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Award and Artist of The Year organised by Artist Lounge. Jione was selected for the Rising Star Report 2019 created by Saatchi Art and was one of three finalists for the Marshwood Arts Award 2019 in the Painting and Drawing category. Jione collaborated with Heal’s Mansard Gallery during the London Design Festival 2019. She has led three solo shows and participated in over twenty group shows.
