Harriet Gillett

Born in 1995, Harriet Gillett is a London-based painter and printmaker. Her work wanders between themes of identity, surveillance and our relationship with myths and nature. With influences ranging from the literary to the art historical and animals, she works from a mixture of observational drawing and memory, blending past, present and the imaginary.

Harriet Gillett's Training and Practice

Harriet holds a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University and a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from City and Guilds of London Arts School. Often bringing together seemingly juxtaposing materials or subject matters, Harriet playfully blurs the lines between the traditional and contemporary, abstraction and figuration, dream and reality. This approach lends itself to a style the artist describes as “narrative, fluid and psychological.” For example, layering organic oil over acidic spray paint or melding watercolour pigments to suggest fluidity. The resulting works have an oniric aesthetic and celebrate the mystery and beauty of the in-between.

Projects and Prizes

Harriet has exhibited her work across the UK, including at Blue Shop Cottage and All-Mouth Gallery. She was also recently shortlisted for the Ingram prize and exhibited work with Purslane Art and Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, a new, UK-based conscious gallery initiative set up in 2020.
