Something for the weekend!

Our pick of what not to miss..

By Rise Art | 04 Aug 2012

The weekend is finally upon us and while many will be glued to the tv screen following the olympic action, there is still plently not to miss outside of the sports arena. Here's our pick of the best events over the coming days, whether it's great art of great food you're after, we've got something for everyone.

Another London, Tate Britain, London

With all eyes on London, why not explore another side of the capital. Bringing together 180 classic photographs shot between 1930 and 1980, Another London presents a view of the capital as a foreign city. Through this compelling collection of images, the complexity and diversity of this vast city is exposed, shedding light on the life beneath the surface of this buzzing metropolis. With the chance to see the work of Bill Brandt and Irving Penn, among others, Tate Britain's latest offering comes highly recommnded by us here at Rise Art.

Liz Lock: Hard Drive, Cornerhouse, Manchester

Liz Lock is a photographic artist living and working in Manchester. Over the years she has collected thousands of pictures. Some she has taken herself with a camera, others were found in family or strangers’ archives. Black and white photographs of zoo animals are interspersed with glamour model shots, and lapdancing-bar interiors are displayed alongside a desert scene. Head to the bar at Manchester's Cornerhouse to see her latest works.

Flat Iron, Upstairs at Owl and Pussycat, London

Taking it's name from the only dish on the menu, Flat Iron is the new pop up steak join housed above the Shoreditch watering hole Owl and Pussycat. Dedicated to 'new craft butchery, remarkable steak and cocktails' Flat Iron offers up simple quality fare such as dripping cooked chips and market greens, and the cocktails, courtesy of the London Cocktail Club go down pretty easily too. Flat Iron is only running until 28th August, so head down soon to avoid disappointment. It's also worth noting that they run a strictly no booking policy, so expect a bit of a wait on a Friday and Saturday night.

Featuring work from both established and emerging artists, this years selection of work includes Rise Art's very own Chris Shaw Hughes, whose monochrome cityscapes are a firm favourite among our members and curators.
