Rebecca King and Her Traveling Prints

Get to know the artist behind these vibrant cityscapes, where she makes use of a unique laser cutting technique. Each city has a deep rooted story behind it, that only Rebecca King can fully explain.

1. WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I believe that art is a living, breathing thing. It is constantly developing and varying, just as we do as human beings. Our internal world is a reflection of what we externally output as an artist. To me it is important to feed my creative practice with the influences and emotions that we feel from the world that we live in today.   2. HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART? I think it is innate. I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t being creative. I remember hearing a quote from Mike Mills “A need to save your life making something.”  When I heard this, it made a lot of sense to me, as above all, I have always had an obligation to create.

3. YOUR ART IN 3 WORDS? Vibrant, energetic and eye catching.   4. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CITY LANDSCAPES? My practice focuses upon a futuristic and architectural desire to explore issues of our social existence. Cultures are becoming increasingly intertwined within one another through the flexibility of pathways through travel, media, Internet and life in our 21st-century cities. As we merge, uproot, settle and divide, we loose a sense of self, of our past, our traditions and cultural identity. As we unite and uprise, we reform as a new form of collective consciousness. This chaotic mix is constantly in flux and shifting - and it is this flux that interests me.

5. WHAT IS THE WEIRDEST RESPONSE YOU'VE EVER HAD TO A PIECE? One of my University teachers once said to me; “Your artwork is like looking into a glistening rock pool” Quite nice I guess!   6. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT? I would like to work on a large-scale community project. My intension would simply be to bring the community together and create something beautiful. Artwork should always be intended to connect or lift sprits and if not, then to at least console the spirit.

7. WHAT KIND OF ROOM CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR ART IN? I can see my artwork in a contemporary styled room. The artwork really lends itself to neutral or white walls because of its vivid colours and strong hues.  When the artwork is displayed on a neutral background, it can transform the space into feature wall.   8. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE A PIECE? Anything from a couple of weeks to a few months.

9. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE LASER CUTTING PROCESS IN YOUR WORK? I use the laser cutter to cut intricate designs into my cityscapes as a way of illustrating the continuous deconstruction and reconstruction within our 21st century cities. The laser cutting also gives the paper aesthetic another dimension and a sense of a positive human spirit that is present, within the whiling patchwork of shapes and geometries.    10. WHAT ARE YOUR 3 MAIN INFLUENCES? Music, memories and planet earth of course.

11. WHAT COLLECTIONS HAVE YOUR ARTWORKS BEEN FEATURED IN? Regarding collections, I am truly honoured that everyday people value my work. I find it much more rewarding that my artwork is hung above people’s fireplaces than in the basement of the Tate.  A great private collection that I'm proud to be included in is that of Bernie Ecclestone - he once bought 5 pieces of my art.   12. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST COMING OUT OF ART SCHOOL? Strive to be great. There is so much going on in the art scene and it moves fast. You must put 100% into every exhibition or portfolio. You only have one shot at getting someone’s attention, make it count!   Enjoyed Rebecca King's art?
