'The new wildernesses on our planet, waiting to be explored, are information, knowledge, history and time. These are altering our relationship with the physical world and the old traditional landmarks.' Stephen Walter.
Tuesday the 2nd of July sees the opening of Stephen Walter's Anthropocene exhibition at the Londonewcastle Project Space in East London's Redchurch Street. Walter's work is a self-proclaimed 'talisman' which blends archaeological exploration with clairvoyant folktales and a little bit of (albeit not too much) Geography in order to procure a creative projection of London's street life.
Stephen Walter - Detail of Subterranea
The works' charter governmental tunnels, burial sites, bunkers and lost rivers which Walter combines with stereotypes and underground legends. In touch with the true experience of London, Walter's eclectic maps emit to their viewer a different interpretation or perspective each time visited. Walter is featured in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the British Library amongst others.
The Rise Art team are delighted to present a selection of Walter's work on our site. Watch this video as an insight into the fabulous context behind one of his latest works, Subterranea.
Stephen Walter talks about producing Subterranea.
