Vikram Kushwah

Born 1983 in New Delhi, India, multi-award winning Vikram Kushwah is a fashion and art photographer known for his meticulously staged photographs of phantasmagorical worlds. Based in Oxfordshire, England, the artist consistently blurs the line between fiction and reality with his surrealistic approach to photography.

Education and Early Career

Vikram moved to London to undertake a postgraduate diploma in Photography at the London College of Communication. He then completed his MA in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in Rochester, England. He has spent a large period of his career working between Britain and India for highly reputable publications including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle, as well as showing his work in esteemed galleries across the UK, Europe and the USA.

Vikram Kushwah’s Style and Approach

Influenced by artists such as Guy Bourdin, Tim Walker and Deborah Turbeville, and movements such as Surrealism and Romanticism, Vikram’s practice is an expedition of sorts into memory, fantasy and imagination. Vikram’s surrealist prints are defined by a hypnotic, otherworldly appeal as experienced in The Twins and The Green Car. A marinade of touching childhood fantasies but with a dash of something more ominous, his series are reminiscent of classic tales such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Vikram’s imaginative photographs seem to be on the precipice of something magical, making for moments of pure escapism.

Press and Exhibitions

Vikram has astounded critics again and again with his increasingly unique portfolio. Vogue Italia featured him among their 'New Talents' and selected his work to be exhibited in their Milan exhibition, Best of PhotoVogue, in 2012. Vikram’s work for Grey Singapore won a Bronze Cannes Young Lions Award in 2013 for Best Photography. On top of this, his Ofelea and the Flying Balloons photograph was part of the AOP50 : Images That Defined The Age exhibition, which featured 50 of the most iconic images from the past 50 years by AOP members. His work is otherwise showcased worldwide. Vikram’s collectors span across Europe, North America, Australia, the Middle-East and Asia.
