Tanade Gallery (Kanda, Tokyo) is pleased to present "Transition / いこう," a solo exhibition by Kotaro Machiyama, running from Tuesday, July 7 to Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Kotaro Machiyama's abstract paintings emerge from an attempt to rediscover the pure act of seeing. By eliminating narrative, depth, and explicit references, his work allows color and form to exist through their own inherent power. The source of his inspiration is the gaze of an infant experiencing the world for the first time — a state of free and open perception, before things are given names.
This exhibition marks the first full presentation of his new series, "Transition." Working directly onto landscape photographs taken in the past, Machiyama applies paint and collage to make visible the process of selection and transformation that occurs within the act of seeing. These works capture the moment at which landscape begins to shift into abstraction — preserving the process itself, rather than its resolution.
