Patrick Simkins reflects on the fleeting nature of existence and the possibility of a new way of living, in harmony with all forms of life. His artistic process stems from his questioning of the stream of images circulating on social media. Have they taken the place of real-life social interactions? Do we now spend more time on screens than in tune with reality? These are the questions the artist raises.
Working from images collected online and layered together, Patrick Simkins creates drawings in which one can discover interlocking forms—an approach akin to automatic drawing—the combined result ultimately suggesting a new, coherent image to him. The artist conjures up some strange situations that evoke anxiety about climate disruption and the state of the planet we will leave to future generations.
