The artist is interested in how global corporations use the allure of their brand to seduce consumers into buying expensive products often at a premium. The idea occurred to Ting-Ting after an investigation of the word ‘fetishism’, which comes from an ancient African language and is used to differentiate the artificial from the natural. ‘Still Life with The Apple’ shows a natural fruit, but recognizes our artificial association of fruit with a consumer brand. It is a playful approach that asks us to consider our relationship with brands and how they drive our behaviour.

Ting-Ting Cheng’s exquisite photographs explore the relationship between objects and people’s emotions towards them. Ting has developed a very particular style of still life that mixes a delicate treatment of the image with an absurdist vision of capitalism and the every day life. The resulting works are minimal and austere, but always poignant artistic plays with the conflicts between branding (the ultimate artificial tool) and nature. In 2011 Ting-Ting Cheng will have her first extensive solo show, opening next June at the Taipei Fine Art Museum.
