British artist Damien Hirst (born in 1965 in Bristol), winner of the Turner Prize, is known for introducing conceptualism into the mainstream with his artworks.

Damien Hirst is one of the Young British Artists (YBA), who dominated the art scene in the UK in the 1990s. Hirst has consistently pushed the boundaries of art and maintained a prolific presence throughout his career with works including conceptual paintings, drawings, sculptures, limited editions and NFTs.

THE RAPID ASCENSION OF DAMIEN HIRST

Damien Hirst studied at Goldsmiths College, University of London, among several other esteemed contemporary artists - including Fiona Rae and Sarah Lucas - who formed the YBA. British artist Damien Hirst's innovative use of abstract materials caught the attention of art mogul Charles Saatchi, who agreed to financially support Damien Hirst, paving the way for his groundbreaking artist career.

Damien Hirst was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1992 for his first YBA exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. Then, in 1993, Hirst's first major international exhibition took place at the Venice Biennale. Damien Hirst won the Turner Prize in 1995 and has been soaring ever since.

BETWEEN SHARK, COW, BUTTERFLY: DAMIEN HIRST'S PROVOCATIVE ART

The British artist's practice explores ideas around duality; life and death, beauty and horror, sacred and macabre. Mortality and our attempt to understand death are central themes in Damien Hirst's work.

Among Hirst's multimedia installations, one of the most iconic pieces of the late 20th century is his famous 22-ton shark preserved in formaldehyde, extravagantly named The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991).

In a similar vein, there is Mother and Child Divided (1993), a cow and calf cut in half suspended in four tanks. Both sculptural pieces also reflect Damien Hirst's enduring interest in collecting and the relationship between science and art.

For the Love of God (2007) is a diamond-encrusted skull that explores vanity and the obsession with death. This is recurring theme in Damien Hirst's universe.

DAMIEN HIRST'S RECOGNIZABLE STYLE

As mentioned previously, Damien Hirst is particularly interested in delving into deep subjects through his artworks such as death, life, beauty, and horror. However, his paintings and limited edition prints are particularly colourful and use beautifully vivid patterns.

Although he might be more famous for his sculptures of a shark, a cow or his diamond-encrusted skull, Damien Hirst produced many paintings and limited edition prints, which you can find on Rise Art.

AN ENTRANCE INTO THE WORLD OF NFTS

Famous for his explorations in art as bold as they are divisive, Damien Hirst recently made a notable foray into the world of NFTs. The British artist Damien Hirst created a collection of NFTs titled The Currency, in which he unveils his original digital works.
