Marcel Van Hoef is a realistic painter known for painting his subjects in sunlight using egg-tempera paint. Depicting his experience of time and space, Marcel takes inspiration from his travels and the continuous metamorphosis of city and nature.
Marcel studied Arts and Art History at Fontys Academies Tilburg (NL) and graduated in 1989. Travel is of vital importance to the development of his art. In 1995, he travelled by Trans-Siberian Express and visited Russia, Mongolia, and China. From Kyrgyzstan to the Middle East, and throughout Tokyo, Dubai, and Kuala Lumpur, over the last 30 years, Marcel has taken thematic inspiration for his works from multiple destinations. The artist seeks out and paints pockets of quiet, hidden away from the volatility of city life.
Marcel has an impressionistic fascination for change which he explores through reflections and light and shadow play. Shapes and subjects are often determined by their reflections- in water, mirror or glass - and the moment they are perceived. And despite the impression of motion and activity in them, there is a breathtaking quietness to his landscape and water paintings. His canvases pulsate with shimmering surfaces and shadows.
He has exhibited his work in galleries, museums and art fairs and won the Global Factories Art Challenge Award at 'Art the Hague' in 2012 and 2016. He has also been the Dutch Winner and one of the 12 international artists rewarded at the VKR75 International Painting Competition, initiated by VELUX HOLDING. Most recently, Marcel showcased his water-motif works at Art Gallery Rozendaal, Netherlands.
