I extend my experience of the world through painting. This invariably results in chaos followed by an acceptable order, which can be called painting. For me, this is about mark making - drawn, painted, written, scratched, gouged, flooded, scrubbed, stuck, dried or dusted. The mark is paramount…Show more whether accidental or deliberate and is an attempt to convey the accidents of a passionate engagement with the world before the accompanying activities of external and internal scanning in which, ultimately, the subject is not the world but the artwork itself.

"The energy felt in these works comes equally from the actual marks and symbols as it does from the empty space between the marks. There is an interesting combination of observed reality and an interior response to the subject. I can’t help but think of Cy Twombly when I look at Philip's paintings."
