Evans is interested in the way memory can fade and distort our experience of place. To capture this, she uses muted colours (as if light has faded), visible brushstrokes which layer and overlap, and almost abstract shapes.
Since returning to Britain, Evans continues to explore our response to the new. She often visits different locations, then comes back to the familiar setting of the studio to build paintings based on "ideas from snapshots, blurry videos, rough notes and memories".Show less
"Charlotte’s fresh and lively landscapes are imbued with a beautiful sense of colour. They are cleverly structured: she paints outlines with such simplicity that they work as abstract paintings in their own right. Her paintings are part of the tradition of 20th century British landscape painting, using the landscape to inspire and create near abstract forms, which for me evokes artists such as Ivon Hitchens and Patrick Heron."
