Robbie Fife: Kist, 155A Gallery, East Dulwich

155a Gallery, 155A Lordship Lane, London
solo show
by Katherine Oliver

Description

This exhibition celebrates a new body of work by Peckham-based artist Robbie Fife that explores the idea of an ‘above and below’. Sticks, roots, kists, the bellies of icebergs, fishing nets, and Greenland sharks all appear in these paintings as objects that appear to have been left behind or buried. Fife’s protagonists are often otherworldly beings, positioned above (whether knowingly or otherwise) whatever exists under the surface.

Much of the work developed during the artist’s recent month-long residency at the Albers Foundation in Carraig-na-gcat, West Cork, Ireland. Fife’s gently surreal imagery was informed by the rural and coastal location of his studio. Sometimes one painting becomes two, or part of a previous work is incorporated into another. The paintings are then reworked in a variety of media; oil, watercolour, coloured pencil, acrylic and collage, until a composition and patina emerge.

Robbie Fife graduated with an MFA in painting from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2014. He has exhibited widely in the UK. Exhibitions include; Nightswimming, LLE @ Mission Gallery, Swansea, 2018; Sightseers, g39, Cardiff, 2018; Outhouse (solo), May Project, Brook Green, London, 2016. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut, USA in November/December 2015 and Carraig-na-gcat, Ireland in September 2019. He lives and works in South East London.

Open 20-29 March 10am - 6pm, with the exception of 23 and 24 March by appointment only.
