A Tale As Old As Time

The story of mark-making with pigments is a story that goes back as far as the dawn of the human race. The oldest known figurative “paintings” - found in the Lubang Jeriji Saléh cave in Indonesia - have been dated as 40,000 years old. As a species, we have always wanted to express ourselves, our traditions, our myths, and beliefs and art has always been one of our favourite methods to do this. The umbrella term of ‘paintings’ encompasses many different styles and approaches: from light watercolour to thick impasto, abstract geometry to photorealistic portraiture.
