My subject is primarily the materiality of paint, exploring the physical properties of oil paint, pushing the boundaries between the colours and the mode of application. I experiment with how different techniques create different forms, reflecting an ongoing preoccupation with the process of painting. Finding a balance between control and unpredictability is fundamental to my practice. I embrace the unpredictability of the paint and respond accordingly in an intuitive way to control the paint, amplifying the strongest visual features of the painting, to enhance discreet formal compositions suggested by drip and flow.
Seeking to create abstract paintings that are evocative of surreal landscapes, I aim to maintain an ambiguity, a tension between abstract and figurative. With this tension in mind, I choose to paint with horizontal layers of colour to suggest geological strata.
