Pete Codling


Pete Codling is an artist based in Portsmouth, England. Having first trained as a sculptor, after twenty years Codling returned to the stripped back practice of drawing following an Arts Council Development Award in 2010.

Codling studied in Portsmouth first, before taking up a place at the Wimbledon School of Art in the 1990s. His first solo exhibition at Aspex Gallery Portsmouth in 1994 of conceptual 'arte povera' objects and installation. He then spend many years working to commission on award winning public art projects across the UK.

From 2010 he dedicated himself to producing a decade of drawing that started with the epic wall drawings of Dust to Dust. In 2017 a solo exhibition of his large drawings was held at The North Wall Gallery, Oxford, The Naivety Drawings have been exhibited every year since in different venues as a contemporary nativity scene made of individual historical and political character drawings.

Most recently created the award winning 'Soup of Souls' a set of 8 giant drawings hung in the nave of Portsmouth Cathedral, created as part of an Artist Residency funded by the Arts Council England.

He is now Artist in Residence at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, in production of his largest drawings to date, a portrait of the city drawn on canvas, the same size as the old historic ship sails.
