Oliver Hoffmeister

Newcastle-based abstract painter and printmaker Oliver Hoffmeister focuses on the esoteric nature of the imagined image, often referencing his own conceived imagery. Attempting to create works of ‘oddities’, he wishes to conjure a sense of uncertainty that leaves the viewer in a state of flux.

Oliver Hoffmeister’s Early Career & Style

Oliver graduated from Newcastle University in 2018 with a first-class BA Hons in Fine Art. The emerging artist experiments with a range of motifs, painterly marks and framing to create indeterminate scenes with vague yet suggestive narratives. The ambiguous nature of his work, loosely based on his own everyday experiences, encourages an imaginative and open dialogue between observer and art. Jester-like and transient, Oliver’s smooth and blurred pastel colours make for a hazy looking-glass into the uncertain and the unknown.

Oliver has exhibited his paintings and prints in a multitude of shows, including The Ingram Collection Young Contemporary Talent Award, Cello Factory, London, UK (2018), The Middlesbrough Art Weekender, MIMA, Middlesbrough, UK (2018), and The Graduate Art Prize, Exchange House, London, UK (2018). Oliver has undertaken multiple residencies, such as a public art commission in conjunction with Kielder Arts and Architecture. He was also awarded The Hatton Prize in 2018 for his work in the Newcastle degree show.
