Last Chance ending Saturday October the 22nd

Phyllida Barlow: Rig at Hauser and Wirth, London.

Inspired by the everyday objects of the city, Barlow has created a group of works that brings the cacophony of the gallery’s external surroundings inside. The urban congestion is ‘captured like something wild or feral’, says Barlow, and is evolved into a purely physical object, stripped of any symbolic context and resituated within the gallery. The verticality and mass of the sculptures, broken up by the staccato application of brightly coloured paints and draped fabrics, takes over the entire building from the basement to the attic.

Mathematics: A beautiful Elsewhere at The Cartier Foundation, Paris.

“Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere”, opening at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art this week, presents work created in the nameof mathematics, bringing the science to a level where viewers can see, hear, and interpret the complex subject in a tangible way. The Cartier Foundation and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) with sponsorship by UNESCO, have brought together six leading mathematicians and eight artists who have previously collaborated with Cartier – artists Jean-Michel Alberola, Raymond  Depardon Et Claudine Nougaret, Takeshi Kitano, David Lynch, Beatriz Milhazes, Patti Smith, and Hiroshi Sugimoto worked to create works with math enthusiasts Sir Michael Atiyah, Alain Connes, Nicole El Karoui, Misha Gromov, Cedriv Villani, and Don Zagier.

See the Rise Art event page for more details.      Nedko Solakov, All in Order, with Exceptions at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.     Ikon presents the first major exhibition in the UK of work by Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov (b. 1957); a chronological survey comprising one work per year since he emerged as an artist c. 1980.   See the Rise Art event page for more details.      John Baldessari, Double Feature at Sprüth Magers, Berlin.     Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are delighted to present in Berlin, with the solo exhibition Double Feature, a new work series by John Baldessari.    See the Rise Art event page for more details.      Anselm Reyle at Gagosian, Athens     Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Anselm Reyle. Reyle finds inspiration in his immediate surroundings, from the typical Socialist architecture that dominates much of the landscape of post-war Germany to the flea-market finds signifying the growth of global capitalism. When making his art, he mines found objects from a profusion of cultural backgrounds; treating and displaying them equivalently and without further comment. By conflating all manners of extant social artifact with motifs from the annals of recent art history, he imbues them with new vitality and decorative allure, thus reinvigorating the dialogue about the role of modernism today.    See the Rise Art event page for more details.
