Pimms and bunting at the ready! As Britain gears up to celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne, we take a look at some of the best events taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend to get you in a patriotic mood.

The Queen: Art and Image at The National Portrait Gallery, London

Lightness of Being (2012), Chris Levine.

As one of the world's most instantly recognisable figures, there is no shortage of artistic representations of Queen Elizabeth's image. The National Portrait Gallery brings together a collection of portraits of HRH dating from the 1950s to the present day, to explore our changing perceptions of the monarchy and how this is reflected in iconic imagery of The Queen herself. Including work from Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz and Lucien Freud, this celebration of regal portraiture is definitely one to see this weekend.

There will be plenty of ways to get involved in the festivities, whether by boarding one of the union jack adorned passenger boats that are to be stationed along the river, or by making your way down the the banks of The Thames to watch the action live or on one of 50 big screens that have been erected. With fireworks, live music and performances all adding to the spectacle, this is sure to be one big royal party!
