Within mathematics, geometry is concerned with questions of shape and size and the positioning of figures and properties of space. This mathematical relationship to form was translated into art and became popular with early 20th-century avant-garde artists. Geometric artists generally created compositions using non-objective forms such as squares, lines or circles, in bold and distinct colours, and placed them within non-illusionistic space.

Geometric-abstract painting often goes further and dismisses figurative or recognisable forms, instead focusing on repeated shapes and the creation of pattern. Josef Albers was a geometric-abstract painter and theorist who made a series of hundreds of paintings and prints called Homage to the Square. Albers’ theory related to a very disciplined approach to composition and this extensive series experimented with different compositions and colour combinations of nested squares.
