    Philip Maltman

    Maltman is fascinated by the 'littoral zone'. This is the shoreline, or the area where the land meets a body of water. He often starts out by studying the ephemeral nature of this zone through observation and photographs. He finds randomly scattered or discarded objects, both natural and manmade, objects and surfaces which he describes as "the aftermath of interruptions in nature".

    This chaotic zone leads Maltman to produce a kind of order out of the chaos. His work is a study in mark making and representing objects on surfaces, whether he's drawing, painting, scratching, gouging…
