    NDIO comes from De Middel's Afronauts project, which has been nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2013. In 1964, after gaining independence, Zambia started a space programme led by Edward Makuka Nkoloso, sole member of the unheard of National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy. The programme, whose aim was to send the first African astronauts to Mars, was soon cancelled, becoming no more than an amusing anecdote in the country’s history.     Cristina de Middel

    Cristina de Middel is an award winning Spanish-born photographer who uses her camera to construct elaborate fictional worlds. Her work weaves together fact and fiction in a way that makes us question the so-called ‘truths’ that we receive via the media. We particularly enjoy the fusion of myth and fact in the artist’s ‘Afronauts’ project, a series of fascinating images inspired by a Zambian space programme that never came to fruition.
