  • Kathryn Roberts

    The Insider Kathryn Roberts says:

"Viewing Malayka’s paintings are like having permission to ease drop on conversations between generations and cultures as they share an intimate moment. The multiple overlapping layers remind me of the many types of human contact that transpire continuously each day, but provide nothing more than a fleeting glimpses of others. Somehow the apparent interaction and closeness of the subjects to one another in Malayka’s paintings makes me feel connected to them, linking friends and strangers on a profound level."

    Need to know

    • Malayka was born in California and specialises in contemporary portraiture
    • Gormally experiments with the development of the painting composition, bringing to the portrait an element of abstraction, an organic grid of form and color, that undergirds the pictorial focus
    • In the last year Gormally has been experimenting with iPad drawings as a way to explore new approaches to figurative imagery
  • Integration

The artist pictures three musicians, electronic producers and rappers: OCnotes, Rik Rude, and Thrills. All three are well known musicians with an international following, and hail from Seattle, USA, where the artist has her studio. The doubling of the figures, which are interwoven with the geometric color forms, invoke the sensibility of the electronic music genre and the counter-culture palette of the 1960's and 1970's in Berkeley, California, where the artist was raised.

This work is oil on linen, and comes signed by the artist on verso.
