  • Clive Jennings

    The Insider Clive Jennings says:

"Sam’s powerful and skilfully executed paintings take their subject from small quirky decoupage images, and reinvents them by vastly increasing their size and context. I love the way that she knowingly includes the original numbered labels while juxtaposing them with dynamic backgrounds – from geometric patterns to neon signs to aerial views of Los Angeles – to create a dark yet humorous narrative."

    • Sam was the Artist-In-Residence at Epsom College for 2 years and has exhibited across the UK
  • He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.

Using paper scraps associated with Victorian feminine pass times, this work from the 'Homemaker' series was created in response to Sam's time in Los Angeles where for visa reasons, she was classed as a 'homemaker'. Background patterns are taken from harem designs in this instance, signifying the gilded cage. By elevating these mass-produced scraps in scale, the miniature world gains a gravity and to make sure the viewer understands the scraps are objects in their own right, the artist has employed the 'trompe l'oeil' effect.
