Danielle Hewlett

Danielle Hewlett is a South African artist who paints expressive portraits. Her aim is not so much to represent her subjects realistically, but rather to re-imagine their energy in paint. She lives by Oscar Wilde’s saying, that “no great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist”.

The artist studied at the National School of the Arts in South Africa before going abroad to train further at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. Upon her return to South Africa, Danielle taught art until deciding to develop her career as a painter.

Danielle has exhibited her portraits in a number of shows at Toto Gallery in Johannesburg. Standard Chartered Bank in New York holds her work in their collection.
