Paulina Wanowska-Dudka

Paulina Wanowska (Poland, 1986) is a London-based artist whose main discipline is photography. She holds a BA in Photography from the University of Warsaw and an MA in Drawing from the Camberwell College of Arts (University of Arts London).

Paulina’s body of work seems to take inspiration from classic photographers, such as Alexander Rodchenko, Francesca Woodman or Bill Brandt and take it to a new, personal territory. She has created a style that is never just Modernist, Surrealist
or Gothic but a sensuous mixture of the three. Her images, mostly in medium format and in black & white are charged with a poetic exploration of both landscapes and cityscapes, as well as of the humans that inhabit them. Mysterious, sometimes even foggy and with an acute sense of framing, these are works with a seeming capacity to transport us to a nostalgic time, like sudden recollections from long-forgotten memories. The figures of the ballet dancer, the ghost and the angel also seem to recur; symbols that reinforce that sense of wonder. With all these elements, Paulina crafts contemporary images that become instant classics.
