Mary Visser

Mary Visser is an abstract artist who works in acrylics to create bold and dynamic paintings inspired by urban settings and vibrant cityscapes. The process of creating is integral to Mary, from the act of mark-making, to the choice of colour and composition. Seeing art as an emotional expression, Mary frequently works in collage to give her work a visceral texture and depth. Mary’s abstract landscapes vary from expressions of bold, tonal blockwork, to energetic layerings of colours.

Mary Visser’s Education and Creative Process

Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1971, Mary has always been interested in responding to the energy of a city space. Mary graduated with a BFA from Rhodes University in Grahamstown in 1992, before returning to her studies in 2012 to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Art from Michaelis School of Art from the University of Cape Town. Nowadays, Mary works by immersing herself in the city, taking notes and sketches, before reworking these initial ideas into abstract collages.

Exhibitions and Awards

Mary is established in South Africa, frequently holding solo shows in galleries across Cape Town. Throughout her career, Mary has also achieved critical acclaim, and was awarded Runner-up in the Convenco Public Art Competition in Cape Town. Mary’s art is now in collections around the country, including HSBC Bank in Johannesburg, the University of Cape Town and Webber Wentzel Cape Town.
